Confined Space Entry Program
The purpose of the Caltech Confined Space Entry Program is to ensure the safety of Institute employees when entering or working in confined spaces that pose specific hazards, such as oxygen deficiency, toxic atmospheres, or potential for engulfment. Confined spaces may require permits for entry, and employees should consult with Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) to assess the need for permits and ensure proper procedures are followed. The Program outlines procedures for identifying, assessing, and controlling hazards in these spaces. This Program ensures compliance with Title 8 of the California Code of Regulations (8 CCR Section 5157). It applies to all Institute employees, including faculty, staff, and students, who are required to enter or perform tasks in confined spaces during normal or non-routine operations.
