Biosafety Program
The Biosafety Program is designed to prevent and minimize potential exposure to biohazardous materials that are used in Caltech research laboratories. Biohazardous material that can pose a risk to the health of Caltech students and employees and to the community as well as to the environment include:
- All infectious organisms (bacteria, fungi, parasites, prions, rickettsias, viruses, etc.) that can cause disease in humans or cause significant environmental or agricultural impact.
- Recombinant DNA material as defined by the NIH Guidelines, Viral vectors, and newly developed CRISPR tools.
- Tissues, fluids, cells, or cell cultures originating from human or non-human primate.
- All employees and researchers planning to work with biohazardous materials must complete either the Basic Principles of Biosafety Training or the Comprehensive Biosafety Course, depending on the type of materials handled.
- All employees working with specific material indicated in left-hand column of page must complete the relevant training.
